Home  What we can do for you Static v Dynamic Contact Us Portfolio

Some Definitions

Theme

A theme decsribes the fixed aspects of your site. Usually, most if not all pages on a site have certain features in common - the overall layout of each page, the header, the footer, the font, the colours etc.

A theme should reflect the character of your business or club, it should be attractive, easy to read and easy to navigate.

Domain Name/URL

The URL (Universal Resource Locator) is the address of your website which, in full, will be something like http://www.yourcompanyname.co.uk.

The domain name is the bit of the URL after http://www. The distinction is important because your domain name gives you access to, not only your website but also, email mailboxes, the FTP server which is used for uploading files and other facilities.

Site Design

Content

This may seem obvious but often isn't. The very simplest site would just provide a brief description of the product or service supplied and some contact details. Usually, though, a site will provide more detail allowing a potential customer to decide whether you are likely to be able to supply his needs.

Some more product detail, a portfolio of your work, a history of the company or club are examples of simple things that can be included. can provide some advice in this area but the final decision is yours.

Theme

What will your site look like? How will viewers navigate between the various pages? Will the menu be across the top or down the side? Will the primary colour be blue, or green or red or ....? What font will the text be? Will it involve graphics or photographs and, if so, what will they be?

You may have firm ideas about what your site should look like and will design it accordingly. Often, though, we will produce a draft site for your perusal, based upon our experience and knowledge of your organisation and leave it to you to approve (or otherwise).

Domain Name

Unless you already own a domain name, the name of your site (its URL) is probably going to be a compromise. Starting with your preferred name (probably something like www.yourcompanyname.co.uk)will determine whether it is available or whether someone else got there first. You may be lucky and get your preference but, if not, will take you through the alternatives until one is found to be available.

You have to register the domain name, usually for a period of two years. Its cost depends on the last part of the name (e.g. ".co.uk") and will range from £10 to £50 for two years. Many companies register several domain names e.g. yourcompanyname.com and yourcompanyname.co.uk. This protects your name and also makes it easier for people to find you.

Cost

A simple static site with one main page and a contact page will cost £150 for the design and implementation. In addition, there would be an annual hosting fee of £40 and a bi-annual renewal of your domain name registration which is variable.

For larger static sites, each extra page will cost between £20 and £100 depending on complexity. (A simple text page would be £20 whereas a page with many graphics could be £100). Hosting may be slightly more expensive if the disk space requirement is substantial.

It is more difficult to provide guidelines for dynamic sites because every one is different but would be very happy to look at your application and provide a competetive quote.
