Some Definitions

FTP

File Transfer Protocol - a method of transferring files between computers on a high speed network.

Browsers such as Microsoft IE support FTP and there are a number of other, stand-alone, FTP programs such as WS-FTP.

Administration

Many dynamic sites provide for the site owner to make changes to the site via a set of administration pages that are password protected and not visible to other viewers of the site.

Examples include updating a diary, uploading photographs to a gallery etc.

Maintenance

Periodical updates

Most sites, but especially static ones, will require regular revisions to the pages to keep the site live and up to date. Usually this will be done byunder instruction from the site owner. For customers who are comfortable with it, we can provide FTP access to the site which allows a customer to make his own changes and upload the revisions.

Administration

Most dynamic sites will have a set of administration pages that are password protected and inaccessible to the normal user. These pages allow the site owner to keep his/her site up to date without the periodical updates described above.

A simple example would be a diary where the casual viewer would see just a diary but the administrator would have pages to permit adding an entry, changing an entry and deleting an entry. These functions are performed by filling out an on-line form and require no knowledge of HTML or programming.

Design Revision

On a longer term basis, a revision of the site theme may be required to provide a new look and feel. A quote will be made for this depending on the extent of the revision.

Backups

Computers are only machines and machines can break down. It is important to keep backups of your website so that, in the event of failure, it can be re-established as quickly as possible.

Namesco, the company providing hosting for, provide backup servers so that, if one goes down, another comes on line seamlessly. They also do daily backups to guard against catastrophic failure.

For more ordinary purposes, will, as part of your hosting cost, perform regular backups of your website. For static sites, these will be done whenever changes are made to the site. For dynamic sites, a monthly backup is standard. If you require more frequent backups, will be happy to quote.

Search Engines

Please askto quote for submission of your site to the common search engines.
