Some Definitions

URL

Uniform Resource Locator - a fancy name for web site address e.g. www.yourcompanyname.co.uk

FTP

File Transfer Protocol - a method of transferring files between computers on a high speed network.

Site Setup

First of all the server must be configured to provide the disk space necessary for your site and to associate your URL with that space.

Then this information has to be passed to the nameservers - the computers that translate your URL into its physical location so that, when somebody types your URL into their browser, it can find your website among the many thousands of others.

All the files for your website are transferred to the server using FTP.

If your site requires a database, it is created and configured.

The site can now be tested to make sure that everything works.

Email addresses, spam filters etc. can be set up so that, if your web site is called www.yourcompanyname.co.uk, you can receive email at yourname@yourcompanyname.co.uk.
